A quick weekend to Melbourne during the Australian Tennis Open – but not actually going to the tennis – provided the opportunity to check out Melbourne’s Gay Night Life.
Having a short trip means one has to choose which gay bars to visit.
Having not visited the Sircuit bar (in Fitzroy) yet it was decided to hit the bar and check out the all male space. Been only a short 20 to 30 minute walk from the city (the tram or taxi can also get you their) I knew I was at the right spot when this motorcycle followed us down the footpath.
With friendly security staff welcoming you to the bar – you knew you were in the right place before you walked inside the door. Been a Saturday the bar was busy with a variety of men and good music playing (though why ABC3 – the children’s channel – was playing on the TV screen will remain one of life’s mysteries).
The bar staff were friendly and efficient – the only shock were the bar prices – but we were out for a good night.
After a couple of drinks we decided we wanted to hit the dance floor – rather than the cruise area upstairs – so headed to the Peel (only a short walk away).
On arriving at the Peel it was packed with a younger age group – we did think about going to the other side of town – but then decided to stay for a drink or two and see what happened. As the night got later the mix changed as men moved from the Sircuit bar to the Peel however the music seemed to lack any sense of direction or style.
